The
woodwork in this job was made from Narra supplied by Environmental
Home Center in Seattle. Narra is referred to as an LKS or "lesser known
species". The harvest and use of LKS species allow the tropical forests to
be sustainably harvested with financial viability instead of logging for a few
well known species and then, in order to see cash from the land, stripping it
for grazing or agricultural purposes.
There
seemed to be no downside using Narra. It had beautiful character and color,
great stability, worked easily and and gave us a finished product with a fresh
look. The occasional burl added a lovely focus at the top of the columns left
and right of the stove.
In
order to maintain an open view through the house to maximize the ocean view,
there were few interior walls on which to place upper cabinets.
The
pullout column was a solution providing a significant amount of shallow upper
storage while maintaining the "no upper cabinet" look.
The small pullout columns left and right of the television
provide ample space for media storage while imitating the wooden column theme in
the house.
