Greene and Greene

Up

This is a furniture set of 6 pieces we designed and built

in the style of Greene and Greene.

The project consists of four end tables,

one demi lune sofa table and a grandfather clock

made of eastern cherry with ebony accents and maple burl panels.

Charles and Henry Greene, brothers,

were architects working in

Pasadena, CA(1900-1930)

during the Arts and Crafts period.

Their work has a number of very

distinctive characteristics

that set it off from the

more rectilinear designs of the

earlier Arts and Craft period.

A lot of emphasis was put on honesty

and integrity in the construction details.

Note the banded top of the tables.

In order to allow for seasonal movement of the solid top across the width,

the end cap extended beyond the main body to allow for that movement.

The ebony spline at that joint covers the tongue and groove joint

between the end cap and the main body of the top.

The functional details were emphasized as part of the art.

It would have been more common for the furniture of that period

to be made from quarter sawn oak or Honduras mahogany.

For this customer we chose Eastern cherry to tie the furniture

to existing cabinetry and trim details in their home.

D'Ireys did the cabinetry for their kitchen and family room two years prior to the furniture.

In order to minimize the contrast between

the furniture lines and the often wavy grain

of plain sawn cherry, lumber was selected

to emphasize the vertical (straighter) grain.
