U-District Remodel

Up

This kitchen began its life in the early 1900s as a grouping of quite small areas...

a servant's stair down into the kitchen,

a coat closet and small breakfast nook

and a small, functional kitchen.

The owner's desire was to change the understanding of the room from the

functional back room

to the

hospitable heart of the home

while retaining the character and period of the rest of the house.

A number of details were drawn from the

other rooms of the house and reiterated in the kitchen.

It was a "coming of age" celebration for the

once pauper princess, now enthroned as queen.

American Black Walnut was used in the island and the dish cupboard

adding  contrast and note of elegance.

Walnut burl was used on the panels of the dish cupboard

to accentuate its place as a stand-alone piece of furniture.

The columns flanking the Viking range, provide a strong,

visual focal point for the kitchen and act also to conceal

vertical pullouts for bottled oils, vinegars, etc.
